What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a single, national scheme that funds reasonable and necessary support to eligible people with intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial disability. Early intervention supports can also be provided for eligible people with disability or children with developmental delay. The NDIS provides support to a child/persons with disabilities who are Australian citizens, permanent residents, or other visa holders with Protected Special Category Visas. NDIS support helps people reach their individual goals and gives them choice about the support they need to live the life they want.

For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need. The NDIS gives all Australians peace of mind if they, their child, or loved one is born with or acquires a permanent and significant disability, they will get the support they need so their skills and independence improve over time. The NDIS can provide all people with disability and their families/carers with information and connections to services in their communities such as doctors, sporting clubs, support groups, libraries and schools, as well as information about what support is provided by each state and territory government.

What doesn’t the NDIS fund?

Generally, the NDIS does not fund supports that:

• Is not related to your child or loved one’s developmental delay or disability
• is funded by mainstream services like the education or health systems
• is part of day-to-day living costs that are not related to your child or loved one’s support needs
• is likely to cause harm to your child or loved one, or pose a risk to others.
